Megan O'Brien Crayne
Marriage & Family Therapist Associate
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I am trained to think systemically. The “problems” that draw people to therapy do not exist in isolation; they are formed and maintained by factors and systems that are both internal and external, personal and relational, local and global. Whether in individual, family, or couple therapy, I believe that all of these factors influence the therapeutic process, and that to make changes that are sustainable we need to pay attention to the systems that they exist within.
My therapeutic approach is holistic and client-centered, and prioritizes attachment. I feel honored to journey into the depths with my clients, and help them find the light in places that feel dark. I am particularly passionate about working with couples who feel stuck in their relationship, and have experience helping couples navigate infidelity, the transition to parenthood, family planning decisions, parenting challenges, pregnancy and postpartum, chronic illness, and other life transitions, as well as communication and intimacy issues and premarital counseling. I also have experience working with clients within diverse faith systems, and helping clients heal from religious trauma.
Education & Background
I received my B.A. in Classics from Stanford University, where I also took a number of courses in counseling, psychology, and human development. I then earned a Master of Divinity at the University of Notre Dame, where I did my thesis on helping couples who were grappling with infertility find life, healing, and wholeness in their relationship. After working in spiritual and religious life at Brown University for four years, I went back to school and got an M.S. in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Rhode Island. During my therapy studies, I interned at the Izzy Foundation, supporting families impacted by pediatric cancer; wrote my thesis on exploring the lived experience of Catholic women who would say they have been “traumatized” by “purity culture;” and developed a particular love of working with couples, particularly using Emotion Focused Therapy. In addition to my general family systems training, I have taken additional trainings in Gottman Method Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Narrative Therapy.
I live in the Providence area with my husband, my two young daughters, and my small but fierce dog, Artemis.
